Challenge - The Good News Paper

PRAYER LETTER OF CHALLENGE LITERATURE FELLOWSHIP OCTOBER 2008

DEVOTIONAL
Rev 4:11 “O Lord, You are worthy to receive glory and honour and power, because You created all things, and for Your will they are and were created.”

You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory, and honour, and power.
They do not say, “we give You glory, and honour, and power”; for what can any “created thing” pretend to give to God? In this they acknowledge that God is exalted far above all blessing and praise that we can offer to Him. This does not mean that we do not praise and worship God, but this should be our motivation to praise and worship God as we realise who we are before Him.
We have the ground and reason for their adoration,
  (a) He is the Creator of all things and none but the Creator of all things should be worshipped. No made thing can be the object of worship, if we worship or desire any other “created thing” more that The Lord then that is idolatry. The Lord God alone is to be worshipped.
  (b) He is the preserver of all things. All beings but God are dependent upon the sovereign will and power of God to sustain them. It is the part of created beings to be worshippers, not to be worshipped. It should not be done out of duty but as a delight Ps 35:27 “Let those who delight in my justification shout and rejoice; and they shall say without ceasing, The Lord be magnified, delighting in the peace of His servant”.
  (c) He is the cause of all things: For thy pleasure they are and were created. It was His will and pleasure to create all things. As God made all things at His pleasure, so He made them for His pleasure, to deal with them as He pleases and to glorify Himself by them. Eph 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them.”

I cannot speak of true religion, without lamenting, that there are so many pretenders to it, so few understand what it means; the only account they can give is that they are of this or that denomination. True religion is a union of the soul with God, a real participation of the divine nature, the very image of God drawn upon the soul, or, as the apostle put it “it is Christ formed in us”.   The love of God is a delightful and affectionate sense of the divine perfections, which makes the soul resign and sacrifice itself wholly unto Him, desiring above all things to please Him, and delighting in nothing so much as in fellowship and communion with Him.
- Henry Scougal (died 1678 age 27)

As this truth becomes established in our hearts it will become our natural desire to want to live and work for the Glory of the Lord.
Matt 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.“

INDIA
A COUNTRY FOCUS

India, located in South Asia, is the seventh largest country by geographical area and the world’s second most populated country with 1.1 billion people. It borders Pakistan China, Nepal, Bangladesh and Burma. Four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here, while Judaism, Christianity and Islam arrived in the first millennium. Of the 1.1 billion population 81% are Hindu, 13% Islam, 2% Sikh and 2% Christian - what a potential harvest field for the Kingdom and for the Glory of God!
Rom 10:13-14 says “...whoever shall call on the name of the Lord will be saved. How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without preaching?”
Challenge Literature Fellowship will be partnering with Asia Evangelistic Fellowship (AEF) in producing and distributing the Challenge Good News Paper in India. The new AEF ministry will be known as Destiny Communications and it will serve as the media arm of AEF incorporating the weekly radio program transmitted to South Asia through the HCJB radio network and the Challenge Newspaper which will be renamed Destiny. The initial print run will be 50,000 copies in the Hindi and English languages.
The official launch of the Challenge paper will be in October 2008 and the first print run is expected in March-April 2009. The paper will initially be distributed into 3 cities Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Bombay, which have a combined population of 35 million.
AEF is also launching a training centre to train pastors and outreach workers with skills and culture-specific strategies to reach 70% of India’s Hindus who would not normally respond to ‘Western’ evangelism methods. AEF currently has 30 national workers and volunteers, several literacy schools, a High school with 300 children and an orphanage with 50 live-in children.
We are greatly excited that this strategic partnership will enable those who make a commitment to Christ through the paper to be followed up, discipled and, hopefully, receieve advanced Christian leadership training. Please pray with us for the leadership of Destiny Communications, the provision of finances, and the appointment of staff.

CAROLYN CARMODY
PERSONAL ASSISTANT TO THE EDITOR

L-R: Micah, Hannah. Rachel, Carl, Carolyn
I was brought up in a Christian home and was very involved in church as a teenager. At seventeen my world was turned upside down when my twin sister left home. Amongst other things she no longer wanted to attend church and from there God began to reveal Himself to me. I had heard of Jesus and His love for me all my life but had never responded. A couple of months later God spoke to me and I saw for the first time my true self, my separation from God because of sin and I received Christ into my life.
At nineteen mum introduced me to a young man she had been sharing Christ with at work but we did not hit it off at all. A year later we met again at church as Carl had just given his heart to Christ. Within 3 months we were engaged and 10 months later we were married. Carl had finished his degrees in Film, TV and Journalism a couple of years prior to us meeting but was focused on radio journalism rather than newspaper. I marvel at how God was putting together the pieces of Carl’s life and mine even before we knew each other. Psalm 139:16 says “You saw me before I was born. Everyday of my life was recorded in your book; every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”
Not long after Carl became a Christian the then editor of Challenge, Pastor Eric Evans, approached Carl and asked if he would be interested in doing some voluntary work writing for the paper. Carl said yes and so began our journey with Challenge. Just before we were married Eric met with us again and asked us to pray about coming into full time ministry at Challenge.
We looked at our situation with only a couple of months left before we were to marry so we asked the Lord to confirm His call by providing a home near Challenge. A couple of days later a lady from Carl’s work asked if we would be interested in renting a house from her daughter. Rent would be cheap because the house would be fully furnished. What an answer to prayer, not only had God taken care of accommodation but threw in the furniture as well and the final seal came with its location, only 1km away from Challenge. In January 1983 we married and March 1983 Carl began working at Challenge. Five years later we had our first daughter Hannah now 21, followed by Micah 20 and Rachel 18. We thank the Lord daily for our girls and are so thankful each of them has accepted Christ into their lives and are involved in different ministries within our home church. Hannah works full time at Royal Perth Hospital, Micah is finishing study for primary teaching and Rachel has begun nursing studies.
I was asked four years ago to join the team at Challenge and as a family we have seen God daily meet every need according to His promise from Matthew 6:33. It is overwhelming at times to see how God is using the ministry of the Challenge newspaper and we continue to see doors open and to be a part of that is a real privilege.
