Will your resolution make the distance?
NEW year resolution: Strength training!
It's of the start of a new year and for many people – that means one thing: broken promises, I mean, News Year Resolutions.
Take a good look around Google any time after Christmas and resolutions are the talk of the town, with advice and announcements the flavour of the month.
One thing that stood out to me, though, was that 40% of all people who make a resolution will break it by the end of January!
It might be because people are not motivated, their resolutions are not achievable or a combination of the two but I think a lot of it is because people identify the need to change without embracing the hard work needed to make it work.
Big change means big work and a lot of New Year's resolutions are not of the small variety. No-one says: "Man, I'm going to make my bed every single day next year. Yeah!"
It's the big stuff. So you want to make a resolution that last? How?
1. Make it real
Write your resolution down or telling someone instead of leaving it in the illogical sorting system in which things often get lost (a.k.a. our minds). Researchers say it could be the difference between making a real life change and making another broken resolution.
2. Focus, focus, focus
Willpower is a limited resource. If you make heaps of resolutions, you won't have enough willpower to keep them all. It's heaps better to make one solid, tight resolution than several loose resolutions.
3. Break it down
I want to lose weight. That is the number one resolution made by people every year, but it's useless. What is lose weight? How much? How long? Do you want to keep it off?
Break it down...I want to lose 2 kilograms a month. I want to have 15% body fat. I want to weigh in at 80 kg at the end of the year.
The more you break it down, the easier it will be for you to achieve because (and I cannot stress this enough) you know what you want to achieve.
4. Seek encouragement
Tell people and get their encouragement! Your friends are your friends because they are looking out for you, so get them alongside you on this one. Last year, I decided to give up fast food, lollies and junk food for an entire year with my girlfriend and I'm only a few days from achieving that.
One of the best things was being able to support each other in this and holding each other accountable.
Encouragement is the fuel that will keep you going when you feel like giving up.
What's my resolution for this year? I want to save $8,000 by the end of December. This means I need to save $166.60 a week until then.
