When Mother’s Day is hard

mother and child

While Mother's Day is special for some, it is a time of sadness for many around the world. Infertility, an empty home after children have left; undesired singleness, death or estrangements, are among many reasons why people simply put on a brave face and struggle through the day with much feeling and emotion. It is important to know that if this is you, you do not face it alone.

The Bible describes many of the same situations key women in the Bible faced. Ruth was left childless and widowed at a young age. Rachel, Hannah, and Sarah were infertile. The prodigal son acted with terrible disrespect toward his parents. Eve and Jesus' mother Mary lost sons under terrible circumstances.

Knowing He was going to be crucified soon, Jesus encouraged His disciples and others saying, "In this world you will have trouble but take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

Jesus did not promise this life would be easy. He did not promise families would stay together; in fact He said that His followers could be rejected by their families (see Matthew 10:36). Mothers will be tested and tried but there is always hope!

The Bible promises that if we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour He will one day "wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away" (Revelation 21:4).

So, let us all be gentle towards each other this Mother's Day. Celebrate with those who celebrate, mourn with those who mourn. Hold tight to God's promise of comfort in troubles and be reassured that, if we trust in Him, our momentary sufferings will one day be replaced with a joy-filled future that will last forever.
