of being a professional player...”

Some readers may recall this newspaper photo a few years ago of twins, one of whom had very light skin, and the other had very dark skin tone...

Tips for life
by Alan Bailey

They can be nice or nasty or somewhere in between. If they're nice, they can make life a little more tolerable; if they're nasty, they can make life intolerable.

What is depression? – Part 1 & Part 2
Depression affects one in five people in their lifetime, and is one of the most common health problems of our time. Up until recently there has been great misunderstanding in the community about the nature of depression, but we are now witnessing an increasing appreciation of what a complex illness it is.
What is depression?

Is an unsatisfied life worth living?
“I reflected on life and wondered whether humans were just like the ants, going about their life, setting goals and striving for those goals and when they were reached there was emptiness instead of satisfaction,” says Janice.
Decoding The Da Vinci Code
“The Da Vinci Code has caused quite a stir not only on commercial grounds but also on religious grounds.”

Life got beyond my control
Mike Wright and his family appeared to have the dream life, until nine years ago when harsh reality struck ...

A tiger in your cave! by Margaret Curran
During a terrible snowstorm in the great Himalayan mountains, he was glad to find shelter in a cave. To his horror, however, he discovered a tiger was already in it. Terrified, he asked God to do the impossible; to keep the tiger from observing him. So it happened, and he was able to crawl out.
But when he thanked God for this he was chided, “Why did you get out? You are My child. You should have ordered the tiger to get out.” Singh re-entered the cave and the tiger left.
Home and away
When a child leaves home it’s not always a happy event. We know the feelings young people have for independence but rebellion can be very hard. “I’m out of here,” they say, “and you’ll never see me again.” And the stunned parents ask: “What did we do wrong?”
Teenagers, these days, listen more to peers than parents. TV programs, education and what kids see happening all around them has eroded their respect for their home.
Beyond football
“I was never someone who thought that I was more talented than the others,” says Edmilson. “When I was young, I never thought that I would get as far as I have. I never imagined being famous, playing in the World Cup, playing in Barcelona: to me it was just to make a little money at Botafogo (club team) and get my parents a new house and that was it..."

South Korea surprise
One of the surprises of the 2002 World Cup was the achievement of co-hosts South Korea in reaching the semi-final.
To put it in context, it was Korea’s fourth World Cup, but before 2002 they had not won a single game!
This time with good preparation and home advantage they exceeded all expectations. It was not just that they reached the semis that was impressive, but the fact that they defeated Italy and Spain on the way.
A member of that extraordinary team, Lee Young Pyo, shares his incredible experience.

Ultrasonic frog sound
Scientists studying a rare Chinese frog have discovered it can communicate by ultrasound – very high pitched sounds that are above the range that human ears can hear, according to reports in ABC News Online Australia (16/3/06) and New Scientist (18/3/06, p21).
The frog is named the “concave eared torrent frog”, because unlike other frogs, the male frog’s ear drums are recessed into its head, and it lives in places where there are lots of turbulent flowing streams and waterfalls.

Building better marriages by Rob Furlong
The wife of an internationally renowned speaker was asked if she had ever thought of divorcing her husband. “Divorce?” she replied, “No!” “Murder ... often!” We laugh because we know that the marriage of two people will have many moments of conflict and friction. But if the conflict is not properly resolved, bitterness and un-forgiveness will destroy the marriage.
Humour can be a great de-fuser of tension when things become heated.
